I volunteer, with the great help of many great people in TWH, my time to raise money for Charities that are close to my heart and these include the Amazon Children's Ward at Peterborough & Stamford NHS, Marfan Syndrome, Pancreatic cancer, Prostate cancer and WaterAid. The time I give usually involves a fun element which might be a eating at Jimmy’s on an Office get-together a Bowling evening, Golf Drive, a Pitch and Putt session or Canoeing on the lake at Ferry Meadows. Any excuse to try to raise a few pounds is my thought and to be honest the Charity element is what make it most worthwhile and if I can not collect anything for charity then I am generally not interested in doing the organising.
These days people have such busy lives that I feel there is rarely an opportunity to get anyone to help you in the organisation of an event, with some notable exceptions where generosity has been absolutely amazing.
From a Wellbeing point of view I always feel brilliant after an event is over, and has gone well, and perhaps has raised a large amount for the Charity involved. It is a rather special feeling one gets inside from being part of something that touches the lives of people with illnesses in particular especially if that illness could shorten their life without funding.
From the Run the World & Band Aid era until now I have raised well over £6,000 for many Charities. I wish I had started raising monies, earlier in my life, because of the feeling of “being part of something much larger than yourself” that you get, especially when a charities break through is announced.
By the way I feel that I am most probably one of a ‘band of quite small contributors over my lifetime’ and I would like to thank ALL the unsung hero’s many of whom do not even talk about what they do or how much they have raised. The people that raise money continuously are the real stars.
