Make 'Blue Monday' Brew Monday!

The Samaritans - Make 'Blue Monday 'Brew Monday' in 2025

This Brew Monday, 20 January, Samaritans is reminding everyone to reach out for a cuppa and a catch-up with the people you care about.

Samaritans Brew Monday will kick off on 20 January, the third Monday in January, which is usually known as ‘Blue Monday’. They'll be turning this day on its head and into something positive by encouraging people to get together over a warming virtual cuppa.

Reach out to a friend, family member or colleague for a virtual cuppa and a chat. It doesn’t have to be a Monday or a cup of tea, just taking time to really listen to another person could help them work through what’s on their mind.

Because now more than ever, sharing a cuppa is more than a drink – it's about reaching out, checking in and staying connected.

Have a Brew Monday, any Monday, or a day that’s good for you.

Is 'Blue Monday' a self-fulfilling prophecy?

"What exactly is Blue Monday?

The term Blue Monday was first used in a 2005 press release by Sky Travel. The day was marketed as the perfect one to book a holiday.

It was the brainchild of psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall who worked out a “formula” for the so-called January blues.  This combines elements such as the time since Christmas, the weather and motivation among others to work out the worst day of the year. However, Mr Arnall has since confessed his formula was essentially pseudoscience and has told people to “refute the whole notion” of Blue Monday."

"Feeling under the weather or depressed in the winter is not narrowed down to just one day, however, and some experience what is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)."

SAD is a mental health disorder which can cause sufferers to feel depressed and anxious during the winter months."

It's important to practice self-care and take care of your mental health all year round and if you are struggling at the moment there is help and support available - visit our mental health pages or speak to a Good Mental Health Ambassador about places to go for suport and advice.
